STUDENT SERVICES INFORMATION
COUNSELING SERVICES
To promote counseling continuity throughout the training program, career counseling services are offered from the initial admissions/assessment phase of the program to its culmination. This goal is achieved by assigning a counselor to each participant.
The counselor’s role is to assist the student in career decision-making as well as to provide supportive services to accommodate his/her needs. Specialized supportive services are referred to an appropriate agency for assistance.
AMERICAN DISABILITY ACT
An American with Disability Act representative is available on-site for those in need.
Information may be obtained in the Admissions Office.
CAREER SERVICES
MCDI vocational students approaching their graduation date are provided job seeking skills, strategies, and services through the Career Services Department. Students are required to participate in three career related programs: The World of Work, Job Ready, and Internship programs.
World of Work
Eleven weeks prior to their graduation date, students are invited to attend our weekly World of Work seminars. In these classes students become equipped with the necessary tools to pursue employment and market themselves appropriately. Seven topics are covered in a five week frame. Classes include Skills Identification, Applications, Resumes and Cover Letters, the Job Interview, Interview Follow-up, Employment Resources and Succeeding on the Job.
Job Ready
Six weeks prior to their graduation date, students are invited to attend our weekly Job Ready workshops. The primary focus of these sessions is job development and follow-up. Students spend most of their time in the Career Services Department pursuing job leads from Career Services staff, scanning job search websites, periodicals and employment postings. Appointments are scheduled for each student to meet with a member of the Career Services staff to schedule interviews and follow-up on job leads generated during that week. Students’ emphasis switches from training to seeking employment.
Internship Program
A critical component of our Career Services Department is our internship program. Internships are offered in most of our vocational areas. A four week internship is offered toward the end of the students’ program. The student benefits from valuable work experience and has the ability to demonstrate his/her skills in an actual employment setting. The student also becomes familiar with this particular company and work environment. In some cases, companies may have job openings, and give first consideration to our students.
